Above are some very old fotos torn out of a someones family album, If you look very close on the rear wheel you can see the belt/sprocket on the rear wheel. Always thought it interesting that the earliest bikes used leather belts, then bikes went to chains then back to modern flexible rubber belts to lessen the vibration n wear. If you found only the engine of this bike, theres a few folks making highest quality replacement parts to build the whole bike once again. The next foto was on the other side....looks like the old "our gang" little rascals.

The great property of 101s is any idiot can get them and keep them running . probably thee easiest to maintain , service bikes i've ever had..Luckily there is a great following so many parts r now available as knockoffs,, I kinda wish Colony or the other big name replacement parts folks would make fenders etc out of thicker gauge metal..plenty of acceleration and very maneuverable...just not a highway bike...i prefer runing drop center rims vs the correct clincher rims,,,clincher rims are the very old early style rims...

Ever get hijacked by these bogus rogue scamwares like "Vista home security 2012 antivirus" ???... first dont ever share your computer...
i have found this one series of steps will always knock out homepage or other style hijacks...this one above was incredibly insidious, could not go to properties my computer etc.... so you can remove virtually all spywares, hijacks, scamwares etc...they look like microsoft updates ...they have the same icons , insignia etc ...
1. on start up hit F8 until "safe mode with networking " option surfaces on a black n white screen ...select that.enter... log on to your computer as normal...
2. in the Start menu on the bottom of the screen, "start search" window....type in "system restore" ...this picks a previous time period when the computer wasnt corrupted...this will unfuck the computer....follow its steps, and it will have reboot your computer and you will be free of the hijack software.....Obviously anytime any popup asks you to update and enter your credit card etc...WARNING...your being scammed..like i wrote above this series of instructions will knock out disable most if not all hijacks n scamwares...
my experience is you dont have to go to "command prompt" and enter code to unfuck your computer,i'm not a big spyware guy either, to me its just another computer vampire knocking out your computer and reporting back to bigbrother w what breakfast cereal you buy.... always interested to know folks ideas on outwitting the scammers....

The new steel came off a 1956-59 Porsche 356 coupe, this area is slightly different. plenty of work , previous owner was a master bondo guy, not a master welder.

for a coupe recovered from the desert of Southern California, it had alot of rust, like a Pennsylvania car.

Heres the other side moth eaten , where the previous bondo master had added flares,...runs everyday..just looks like hell.

14.000 miles later..not much left..my neighbors toddlers could load these on while watching TeleTubbies, its that easy...the only hold up is on the rear caliper , load the one brake disk last from the non caliper side , then slide the pin into place..bleed n go...I love riding the old iron but sometimes you just wanna go w/out having to monkey w small issues.

This is the complete heater fan assembly heater core unit out of the 1963 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider, same for all the 101 and other models, i doubt this has ever been apart since it left Milan in 1960s, fan works, mini radiator heater core has no leaks or plugged up channels, if it did you can just pour a very small amount of acid thru it , or radiator flush, ,these units dont put out alot of heat anyway..thats what they look like , so you can see whats missing on yours, 3 bolts to secure to dash. i think a hair dryer puts out more heat..

Close-up on the 1936 and up neck and you can just see at the bottom of the foto the "telescopic" down tubes of the forks, 1 tube into another. and the exposed rocker assemblies of 1936 and 1937.

Another close up on the 1936 front head, So when you find them you know what you are looking at,... Had to pull the engine , machine the oil pump surface, we think there may have been a air leak at the interface of the oil pump n case surface... never ever encountered this, and do a proper case fit as the cases leaked, plenty of work , but do it right once and you can put plenty of miles on a properly built engine.

Nice to work on my own stuff for a change.

Alfa Romeo 101 series fuel tank sending unit maintenance

Heres the sending unit w the "Pinot Noir wine bottle cork" from the factory in Milan. So you can see as the lever n cork swing from buoyancy it moves the metal lever on the copper toaster area which is reflected on the gas gauge. This unit failed and before i opted to buy a new one from Centerline in Colorado i thought to brush clean off all the rust , debris at the terminals n clean up the wires n connections etc..Thats all it took to bring the fuel gauge back. Of course these old style gauges fluctuate from E to F as you drive because the cork is moving in the fuel tank . A modern Benz or Nissan wont do that.

a real cluster fuck , when you come back to clean up someone elses wiring...Sometimes all it takes is running new wire , cleaning terminals w a metal brush on a Dremel or drill to restore function.

This will be the same for most antique vehicles.

Back to servicing the knucklehead, oil pump failure, poor job on engine case assembly by long ago owner,.. so i'm reassembling my knuckle n i got these "cast iron piston pin keepers" to secure..holy fuck batman.. these made in the peoples republic of lead painted childrens toys...are made out of cheap cast iron... not the proper spring tension metal, and they r missing the 2 holes for the ring expander to fit in , see foto... so some part not worth a fraction of a penny can take out your motorcycle. truthfully i'm thankful that country doesnt build passenger aircraft...what a disaster if they did...imagine how poorly made their nuclear weapons must be?? next to the busted rings u can see a set i think for r12,,, w the proper holes.

So you can see its a 1913 HD, no footboards or the brackets on frame for footboards, 1913 would still be a single speed hub in rear wheel, 1914 gets the first year for a 2 speed .Note the manifold has a opening on it.No pushrod tube covers until 1914 models. Gas tanks w separate oil tank below seat. Why the motor company doesnt buy all these up is beyond me.. I'd get an aircraft hangar and fill it. What ever is missing is available as excellent high quality reproductions.

1940 WW2 BMW R12 front brake cable service

Harbor Freight here in USA has great tools ,like this motorcycle stand..

Missing the correct cone style front wheel spacer...previous driver used worn out Timken berring assemblies as spacers!

New cable, as-is original rust and paint...

Front brake lever w new cable.I did have to grind the brake cable end piece keeper to fit inside the front brake cable assembly, So its not just swapping out parts.

Blown apart front brake cable and new Made in Germany replacement..not that made in the "Peoples Republic of I dont give a fuque" or "its on the boat..its your junk now"

Give yourself a little xtra cable so it fits correct. I did have to Dremel grind off 6 inches of outer cable to get it to fit...

Interior splined front brake drum.. I was looking for the splined part that mated to it,,not here..Turns out the R12 front drum is the same as the R12 rear drum , so no the splined parts not missing,, Being that the front spacer was missing i just assumed the splined part mating to this was another for the missing or lost parts lot.

Note the paper thin front brake pads, 72 yrs later ...worn out ..but at least it wasnt metal on metal..So next re-pad the front shoes,,so the bike stops with not just the rear brakes.. Theres always the "Fred Flintstone" braking option.

The tires are very old Russian tires someone added postwar in Latvia to keep riding it after the wartime tires wore out, the tread passes safety but the sidewalls are dried out.

1955 Porsche windshield wiper mechanism repair

Heres the actual windshield wiper mechanism that controls the wiper, mounted below the dash.

All old Porsches have this failure, the wiper stops rotating but the linkage below the dash is functioning. What is the actual failure in the mechanism? a tiny metal rod or pin , thats all. the small cranks wont break they r tough metal, When i looked around to replace the units i only found very very expensive replacements, and its not a part common to the early VW like many other parts like the wiper motors, The actual unit is riveted together, assuming no one is going to drill out the rivets to determine the failure. ..So thats what i did,,, next time use a drill press to get the holes straight. Study the fotos and you will see the tiny pin that needs replacing ..thats it!then just get some nuts n bolts grease it and reassemble. The most difficult part is you just about need a toddler to climb under the dash to remove both assemblies,,i like working on old metal, iron , parts vs the chinese mystery metal or water bottle plastic all new cars are made of.

No wear at all on the crank teeth! Very simple reassembly,, so if you have this problem or you have an opportunity to buy used non working wiper units , now you can easily fix them.

Harry Sucher's book The Iron Redskin mentions the light twin model o , introduced in 1917 as the replacement for the underpowered model K. The model o above was only produced in 1917 and 1918. Another great reference book ;Jerry Hatfield's Indian Motorcycle Photographic History mentions non-Indian riders calling it the model nothing, Interesting how one motorcyle maker can generate a failure w a design and another motorcycle maker like BMW could turn the opposed twin into a hugely successful design.

1913 Harley Davidson Twin Cylinders discovered

Matched serial numbered set of rough 1913 HD twin cylinders. On the back side ,at the base of the cylinders are the serial numbers ,then on the cases below one would see the same numbers, After 1914, HD ceases numbering the cylinders.One can see the exposed valve spring, one per cylinder, Starting in 1914 all engines would be fitted w valve covers, note 1 valve cover per cylinder vs the 2 valve covers in later bikes. the fins are busted off but the cylinder base corners are all intact.amazing!
No primers on the backside of the cylinders either, One would open the primer and inject fuel,my guess is that after HD experimented w "atmospheric valves" someone engineered the early primers to the cylinders to inject/deliver fuel directly into the combustion chambers for easier starting. My guess is the "fuel vacum" of the early carbs just wasn't enough to get fuel into the combustion chamber.The primers ,one per cylinder start in 1915. the cylinders on the early engines are the hardest to find, So one could use 1913 Twin cylinders on 1911 thru 1914 models only.No one as far as I know is reproducing early twin cylinders, and NO ..one cannot interchange Single cylinder barrels on Twin cylinder barrels.. next to get the rest of the engine ,...the old foto is a 1912 or 1913, cannot be a 1914 because?
No valve covers, No footboards, No 2 speed shifter on the gas tanker.

No its not a genuine nut n bolt 1936 Knucklehead, its a survivor Knuckle w 1936 lower end and all the modifications to make it a 1 kick bike. Solid state ignition, coil, Andrews cams,S n S rods, flywheels, 5 fin barrels , 47 n up heads, belt drive..S n S oil pump,carb, Pan cam cover n oil filter, no its not a 41-46 cam cover. 1914-1939 square footboards...

Reader wanted me to ID this frame. Many old frames have frame numbers eradicated by weather over time,so if u find a frame w/out frame number dont be surprised, this frame starts w 234... so 2 for standard scout and 34 for 1934.

moth eaten rear panels after flares were carved off,

replacement quarter panels

swapped out the junked steering wheel for a knockoff banjo style. fits and functions great.Life support added where the huge Blaupunkt was long ago removed. far from done but runs every day.

1955 and earlier dash .plenty of work left.

original seats were too far gone to service, got these race car seats in a trade,they work for now.added neck support and safety not offered by the original shoulder height Porsche seats. Wonder how many folks got broken necks from those shoulder height seats?

Reader sent me this discovery, w valve covers it would be a 1914, first year for valve covers although a person could have updated a 1912 or 1913 twin that did not have valve covers.

Very kool . Amazing discovery... I'm still looking for a early engine 1914 or earlier for a project to build.

This four is 100% in this chaos pile of some 378 motorcycles in a closed concrete factory back in the 1970s! Took me forever to find the 1979 magazine article on Al Shirer, former Indian dealer back in eastern USA.. You must slowly study the fotos to see girder chiefs, this four and you name it motorcycles. Hoarder? Motorcycle collector? or just dont give a damn? or living the dream.

Broken bakelite splittdorf magneto part will work w aluminum foil till i get a replacement.

M18 Linkert works while the Schebler DLX64 is out of commission.

later 1930s era oil pump, recirculating after its plumbed to tank.

Far from riding but it fired up today, w a squirt of fuel and just enough oil to not grenade.

One of my friends insisted I post some of these Totenkopf items, the top r ww1 and earlier Spike helmet and Busby cap badges, the cloth are all mine field warning flags .the original idea w the skull motive was a attempt at intimidating the enemy, psychological warfare back to the time of pirates and the jollyroger skull.now its a fashion statement for some. If u like it i'll find more to post. Folks like decorating their bikes w the skull n bones insignia.You could do a whole new blog just on deathshead ,totenkopfs etc, very pervasive subject. I was just thinking of doing a horn face w a beater badge......

The above foto is not part of the foto group below, 3 WW1 U-boots surrender is all thats on the back. All the ww1 uboats r at the bottom or scrapped . You can see the cable,net cutters at the front. Just a neat old foto from another desperate time in history.

Stumbled on this grouping of ww1 U-35 Fotos.they are from 1914 era, on all the backs are this style description, not sure if they are press fotos or sailors souvenir fotos. Not motorcycle related but pretty kool to see. U35 is at the bottom of the ocean somewhere.

the above is the after, Boretech in Batavia Ohio serviced the valves, pistons etc, there was just enough original nickle left so i didnt plate them . best machine shop i know..

Comparing 1935 and 1936-39 Chief frame necks

I get this question alot, and I'm not an expert on anything. So if this helps. the frame directly above is a true 1935 Chief, see how the neck is "hollowed" and theres no shifter bracket. Pretty early for a neck lock too. Now look at the 1937 Chief frame w red tank, the neck gets thickened in 1936 to 1939, no shift bracket in 1936 it shifts off the trans tower in 1936, 1937 introduces among other features, shifting via a linkage. HD big twin frames thicken the neck casting in the 1947 models ,i believe theres 3 maybe 4 variances in frames that year.
